What
is Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)?
Premenstrual Syndrome is
a group of symptoms that many women experience each month preceding
the onset of their menstrual cycle. Between one-third and one-half of
all American women between 20-50 years of age experience some symptoms
of PMS.
Causes of PMS include prostaglandin
malfunction/deficiency, estrogen (hormone) excess or imbalance, glandular
insufficiency (especially thyroid), lack of regular exercise, poor diet
(low in B vitamins), magnesium, calcium, and protein deficiencies, endometriosis,
poor circulation, too much salt, red meat, sugar, caffeine, stress and
emotional tension. Symptoms include mood swings, tension, irritability,
and depression; argumentative, aggressive behavior, water retention,
bloating and constipation, headaches and lower back pain, sore and swollen
breasts, nausea, heavy cramping and excessive menstrual flow, low energy,
food cravings for salts and sweets with extreme thirst, alcohol craving,
nerve pain, acne and skin eruptions, and light-headedness.
Pre-Menopause/Menopause/Hot
Flashes: During pre-menopause, excess lutenizing hormone is released
from the pituitary gland in a futile attempt to raise estrogen levels.
These hormone surges can cause extreme changes in skin temperature,
and subsequent hot flashes. Menopause is marked by the cessation of
menstruation, caused by erratic estrogen and other hormone secretions
by the female glands causing hot flashes, insomnia, lack of sexual interest,
irritability, calcium imbalance, unstable behavior, mood swings, and
palpitations. Disturbance of metabolism during menopause can cause osteoporosis,
skin and vaginal dryness. Menopause brings on various symptoms for women
including depression, fatigue, cramps, irritability, and headaches.
