Learn more about your skeleton, what is and what causes osteoporosis:

The Skeleton
The skeleton is made up of over 200 bones. It is a rigid framework which gives shape and support to the body. Bone is a highly vascular (large blood supply), living, constantly changing, mineralized connective tissue. It is remarkable for its hardness, resilience, growth mechanisms, and regenerative capacity. The organic matrix (structure) of bone is made up of bone salts, which give bones their hardness and rigidity. The most important of these bone salts are: calcium, magnesium, phosphate, carbonate, hydroxyl, chloride, fluoride (elemental), and citrate. Nutritional deficiencies of these crucial ‘building blocks’ can be the root cause of many skeletal conditions.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a very common condition that affects women more than men and Asian and Caucasian people more than African-Americans. Osteoporosis is a decrease in bone mass and density, that leaves porous spaces (holes) in the bones. This causes a loss of the supporting mineral bone structure, weight and height loss, thin, painful, brittle bones, and easily broken bones. Osteoporosis is the most common whole-body bone disease in America, affecting approximately 40 million people, mainly women, causing thousands of injuries and deaths per year.

What causes Osteoporosis?

Mineral (calcium and magnesium) deficiencies; menopause and unbalanced female hormones, protein and collagen deficiencies, excess cortisone or steroid use (Cortisone, Prednisone), smoking, excessive consumption of animal protein, sugar, salt, caffeine, soft drinks and/or hard liquor consumption, heavy metal and environmental chemical exposure (especially cadmium and nickel) are all underlying factors of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is an epidemic in America. Bone density and mass reach their maximum levels for women at approximately age thirty and thirty-five. There is a normal decrease in bone mass after age 35-40, but due to causative factors (see above), this bone mass loss is increased in persons with osteoporosis. Almost $4 billion is spent yearly in America treating conditions related to osteoporosis.
